One sneaky operator even ran three different accommodations under different addresses without a single price list! There was even a self-checkout (unmanned) hotel that had never posted its rates since the day it opened.
Byun Kyung-ok, the head of the city’s special judicial police bureau, made the city’s stance very clear: “We will continue intensive crackdowns and investigations on unlawful practices at lodging facilities through the day of the concert so that foreign tourists visiting Seoul for the BTS comeback performance do not face any harm or inconvenience.”
As a local, seeing the city step up to protect tourists makes me so proud, but you still need to stay vigilant!
The Public Health Control Act (Know Your Rights!)
Did you know that hiding hotel prices is actually illegal in South Korea? Under the Public Health Control Act, every lodging operator must do two things:
- Display their official business registration certificate inside the premises.
- Post a clear accommodation price list right at the front reception desk.
They are legally bound to charge you the rates posted on that board. The 18 establishments caught ignoring this law are now facing serious consequences. Depending on the ongoing investigation, these operators could be slapped with fines of up to 5 million KRW (about $3,400 USD) or even face up to six months in prison! The city is also asking local districts to hand out administrative punishments, ranging from strict warnings to 10-day business suspensions, or even outright closures for repeat offenders.
5 Insider Tips for Booking Your Concert Hotel

Since you’ll be hanging out in the Gwanghwamun area, you have to explore Seochon Village! Located just west of Gyeongbokgung Palace, it’s honestly one of my absolute favorite date spots. It’s much quieter than the main tourist traps and is packed with cozy hanok (traditional Korean house) aesthetics.
Coffee and Culture in Seochon
Skip the giant franchise cafes and wander the narrow alleys. My top recommendation is Cafe Namusairo, a gorgeous spot hidden near the palace that serves incredible hand-drip coffee in a modernized hanok setting. Another great find is Gongjung Jeongwon, which doubles as a quiet select shop and pour-over coffee haven. It’s the perfect vibe for unwinding after dancing your heart out at the concert!
The Best Comfort Food
You cannot leave the area without trying Tosokchon Samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup). Yes, there might be a line outside, but it moves quickly. The rich, nourishing broth is exactly what you need to recharge your energy for the BTS show—it’s my husband’s favorite weekend lunch spot!
How to Report a Seoul Hotel Scam (And Maybe Get Rewarded!)
Let’s say you arrive at your hotel and they suddenly demand double the price, or they refuse to show you their rate sheet. Don’t panic! Seoul City is actively taking citizen reports up until the day of the concert (March 21st).
If you spot illegal lodging operations (like unregistered officetels), missing price lists, or businesses ignoring their posted rates, you can report them to the city’s response center. If you provide solid evidence, the city will review your case, and you could be eligible for a reward of up to 200 million KRW! Talk about turning a frustrating situation into a major win!
