Is ChatGPT down for you too? Ugh, total nightmare, right? 😭
I was literally in the middle of drafting a caption for my latest Seongsu-dong cafe hop when the screen went blank. If you’re currently staring at that spinning circle of doom, take a deep breath. You are not alone.
Hi! I’m your resident Gen Z expat here in Seoul, and today I’m teaming up with my “unnie” (big sister)—a Seoul native who’s lived here for over 20 years and just tied the knot! (Congrats, Unnie! 💍). Together, we’re turning this tech tragedy into an opportunity.
Since we can’t ask AI for an itinerary right now, we’re going old school. Here is our insider guide on what to do in Seoul when the robots take a nap—from the best local AI alternatives to hidden spots where you can actually enjoy a digital detox.

1. The “Local” Fix: Switch to Naver’s HyperCLOVA X
Okay, if you desperately need an AI brain right now—maybe you’re translating a menu or looking up a bus route—stop waiting for OpenAI to wake up. Do what the locals do.
Did you know that South Korea is actually the #2 market in the world for paid AI users? We are obsessed. But when the big American server crashes, Seoulites switch to Naver’s HyperCLOVA X (or “Cue:”).
- Why it’s better for Seoul: ChatGPT is great, but it sometimes hallucinates when it comes to Korean geography. Naver’s AI is trained on… well, Korea. It knows that the “hip cafe in Hongdae” you asked about actually closed two months ago, and it understands Korean slang (and honorifics!) way better.
- Pro Tip: If you can’t read Hangul perfectly, the Naver App has built-in AI translation that puts Google Translate to shame.
2. The Accidental Digital Detox: Naksan Park
“If the AI is down, maybe the universe is telling you to go outside,” my newlywed unnie says. (She’s currently in her romanticize-your-life era, and I’m here for it).
Since you can’t ask ChatGPT for a “romantic sunset spot in Seoul,” I’ll give you the best one: Naksan Park (Seoul City Wall).
- The Vibe: It’s quiet, it’s historic, and the view of the city lights coming on is magical. It’s a favorite date spot for locals because it feels like a K-Drama set.
- Hidden Gem Alert: After your walk, hike down slightly to Cafe Nakta. It has incredible views and usually isn’t overrun by tourists. Sip on an iced latte and look at the real world instead of a screen.

3. Go Analog at a “Book Cafe”
If you were using ChatGPT to write an essay or code, and now you’re stuck, change your environment. Seoul has an insane number of aesthetic “book cafes” where the vibe is so studious, you’ll be productive even without AI.
- My Pick: Cafe Gongmyeong (Yeonnam-dong). It’s technically a “book cafe” run by a publisher. The ceilings are high, the pastries are huge, and everyone is working silently.
- Unnie’s Pick: Terarosa (POSCO Center). It has a massive steel library aesthetic. It feels like a fortress of knowledge. Perfect for when you need to feel smart but your AI brain is offline.
4. Explore “Old Seoul” in Ikseon-dong
Since we can’t generate a “top 10 trendy places” list, let’s go somewhere that has survived way longer than the internet: Ikseon-dong Hanok Village.
This is my unnie’s favorite place to take visiting friends. It’s a maze of tiny alleyways filled with traditional Hanok houses converted into modern cafes and shops.
- Must-Visit: Cheongsudang. You’ve definitely seen this on Instagram—the entrance with the stone steps and lanterns? Yeah, that one. It’s even prettier in person.
- Why go now? When ChatGPT is down, we stop optimizing our time and start wandering. Ikseon-dong is the best place to get lost. Put your phone in your pocket (the GPS barely works in those alleys anyway) and just walk.

5. The Ultimate Disconnect: Healience Seonmaeul
Okay, if this outage has made you realize you are way too dependent on technology (guilty 🙋♀️), you might need a hard reset.
There is a place about an hour outside of Seoul called Healience Seonmaeul.
- The Kicker: Cell service and internet do not work here. Intentionally.
- The Experience: You wear comfy pyjamas, eat organic food, do yoga, and hike. It’s a “digital detox” resort. My unnie went here before her wedding to de-stress, and she said it was the first time she slept 8 hours straight in years. If the internet is going to be broken anyway, you might as well be in a spa in the mountains, right?
So, is ChatGPT down?
Yes. But Seoul is very much up.
Whether you switch to Naver, grab a coffee at Naksan, or just take a nap, use this downtime to reconnect with the city. The AI will be back soon, but this sunset over the Han River is happening right now.
What do you do when your favorite apps crash?
