Mutual Sound Club in Seochon: All Hype, No “Core”?

Yesterday, on a beautiful snowy day, I headed to Seochon to check out Mutual Sound Club. If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen this place. It is incredibly popular right now, specifically targeting women in their 20s and 30s.

When I walked in, the demographic was exactly that—almost exclusively young women enjoying the vibe.

The Interior & Vibe

I have to admit, the interior is hip. It has that trendy aesthetic that looks great in photos. I also noticed they were using JBL 4319 speakers, which sparked my interest initially since that’s some serious hardware.

The Disappointment: Lacking a “Core”

However, my experience went downhill pretty quickly. To put it bluntly: I didn’t like it.

It felt like the place lacked a “core”—a soul or a genuine identity. It felt like they just copy-pasted whatever is trendy right now to make a “cool” space without any substance behind it.

For a place that calls itself a “Sound Club” and displays nice speakers, the audio experience was a letdown. Maybe the settings weren’t dialed in correctly, but the music just didn’t sound clear or immersive. If you are going to focus on sound, the audio engineering needs to match the equipment.

The Price Shock

The biggest issue, however, is the pricing. It is shockingly expensive for what it is.

  • 330ml Beer: 13,000 KRW ($10 USD)

I started with a Korean craft beer, but the taste was disappointing. I switched to a Guinness for my second round just to be safe—that was also 13,000 KRW.

The Verdict

My friend and I ordered one snack and had a total of 6 beers (3 each). The bill came out to 94,000 KRW.

Honestly, is that reasonable? I would happily pay that much if the music was phenomenal or the atmosphere was unbeatable, but neither was true.

Leaving the place, I realized this is just another “Instagram-famous” spot fueled by aggressive advertising. It looks good on the surface, but it’s hollow inside. It has no core.

Pros:

  • Hip interior design.
  • Good for Instagram photos.

Cons:

  • Extremely overpriced drinks (13,000 KRW for a small beer).
  • Sound system isn’t tuned well despite good speakers.
  • Feels like a trend-chasing spot with no unique identity.

Would I visit again? No.
